Eric Probst currently holds a one year position as Principal Tuba with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Prior to moving to St John’s, Eric was an active member of the musical community in the Greater Toronto Area, and a busy educator and low brass specialist. In addition to his private studio of brass students, he taught at a number of local high schools, camps, and retreats, providing private lessons and large group clinics. Eric has worked as a freelance tuba player and military musician, performing most often with Weston Silver Band, and The Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada. He has also performed with The National Youth Band of Canada, The Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, and The Hannaford Street Silver Band.

 

Eric's competition successes include the Hannaford Street Youth Band Solo Competition in 2008, The University of Toronto Wind Concerto Competition in 2010, and 1st place in First Section with The Weston Silver Band at the 2015 North American Brass Band Association competition in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

 

A native of Markham, Ontario, Eric pursued post-secondary studies at The University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, studying with Sal Fratia, and graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance. He subsequently was awarded the Macnee Family Scholarship to attend The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied with Sasha Johnson of The National Ballet of Canada. Eric is currently completing a Master of Music in Tuba Performance and Pedagogy at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, studying with Dr. Dale Sorensen.

 

A Sergeant in the Canadian Army Reserves, Eric has spent the last ten summers in Ottawa performing with The Band of The Ceremonial Guard for the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. He has also performed with The Royal Canadian Artillery Band in Edmonton, and currently belongs to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band in St. John’s. Eric is pursuing a career as a professional military musician in the Regular Force.
